This is devastating news. Eric was a truly gifted voice in science fiction, warm, sensitive, filled with wonder, memorable characters you really care about, and a healthy share of excitement and action. I love his work, especially the Bengal Station trilogy, which I have read twice and will definitely do again. A body of work that we will enjoy and treasure for years to come. Thank you, Eric, for all you gifted to us.

Loyal reader for 35 years since being blown away by his short stories in Interzone. Have tried to acquire everything he has written, including his young reader titles and adaptations of Wells. Words fail to describe his ability to pull the reader into a SF or 1950s mystery or any setting. Still reeling from the news–it’s been a habit of my own life to look forward to his next books.

Jeff – you and I seem to have the same trajectory: I was a fan as soon as I read the Time-Lapsed Man in Interzone, and have followed Eric ever since. I still think many of those early stories are among his best work, and re-read some of my favourites over the weekend as a tribute: Star Crystals and Carmel, and Song of Summer in particular. Very sorry to hear this sad news, my thoughts are with Eric’s family and friends. I wonder if there is anything we as fans could do to show our respects?

Hi Richard, Yes, there was a magic to those first stories when they arrived, and that consistency of quality carries through all Eric wrote, for Wormhole is just as riveting! On this site I recently asked him about forthcoming books, with no clue about his health. Approaching Human (Shoreline) and Enigma Exposed (PS, with Keith Brooke) had been announced, and there are many short stories published since his last collection…I hope if there is an online event to honor him it will be posted here. It’s great to see that his following is loyal and enthusiastic–and all of us are stunned by his passing.

  4. I’m still having a hard time believing Eric is gone and I never even met him; I’m simply a big fan of his works. He is definitely an under appreciated author who deserves much more recognition for his very powerfully human stories of adventure and suspense. RIP Eric.

  5. Oh my God, this is terrible. He was a wonderful writer; “Kings of Eternity” is one of my favorite SF novels. I don’t understand why he wasn’t more famous. R.I.P.

I have only just discovered the sad news. I worked with Eric in the mid 80s before he became a published author. His enthusiasm for writing was evident back then, but he was also a quiet, unassuming man. He shared many stories of his travels and life outside work and was always interested to hear the stories of others. I have happy memories of our discussions about literature, politics, music, good food (he convinced me to turn vegetarian!), and the best beers and curries.
I’m pleased that he got the recognition he deserved and loved the Langham and Dupre mysteries.
My thoughts are with Eric’s wife, daughter and family. RIP

I did a lot of covers for the novels he wrote. It was always a pleasure to work with him because we liked the same things. He left us too soon.

Your covers did a fantastic job of capturing the spirit and epic scope of his works! The books with your art had a distinct look that reeled the reader in! I hope there is news soon on further publications, short story collections, reissues…anything intended by PS Publishing or others?

Although my interest in his writing was probably initially piqued by his name, I was quickly reeled in by all the story lines. Very sad to hear of his passing
